Whilton Mill August 2008
Jack Macaulay, cadet, picked up the novice trophy for the second month in a row, well done! Jack also won an invitation race, held earlier in the week, which is the subject of a channel five documentary to be televised soon... Watch this space!
Daniel O'Beirne, cadet, has really grown in confidence since his third place at Rissington. A couple of fine drives in heats one and two were marred by contact in the last heat. Unfortunately, skirmishes in the A Final resulted in a disappointing 25th, but having beaten his personal lap time he won't be too disappointed.
162 driver Tom Thompson is not a regular at Whilton, so it is to his credit that after having notched up some solid results in the heats, he started in p.12 for the final. Unfortunately Tom was involved in an accident at the start which compromised his race. He had to be content with 16th place, but I'm sure he'll be back for more.
Jon Barnes in Rotax 177 experienced his first every race, and didn't he do well! He kept out of trouble in the heats, made some nice overtaking moves in the final and ended up 19th with a fastest lap that shaded some of the full plate guys. Promising stuff...
Keith Gatton, another 177 driver, had a day to forget after a bad smash in heat two. This necessitated some major rebuilding for the final which became an exercise in damage limitation. He stayed out of trouble and finished a very relieved 16th.
Alex Gatton, Rotax 162, had good finishes in heats one and two, but these were wiped out at a stroke when the conrod punched a hole in the crankcase in heat three. Never the less he doggedly worked his way up to eighth in the final on his practice motor, from a disappointing grid 14th.
Shenington August 2008
Last weekend promised much for cadet Kart Coach driver Daniel O'Beirne. All fired up after his third place at Rissington the previous weekend, he pulled off some great opening lap moves in his first two heats to finish with an 8th and a 9th. Unfortunately, he came off the loser during an ambitious move in his final heat, which relegated him to p.20 for the A Final.
Another brilliant start took him to p.16 by lap one, and he looked strong for a top ten finish until a tangle with another driver on lap four, causing him to tumble down the field. Despite this setback, his pace during the weekend should stand him in good stead for his next meeting at Whilton Mill.
Alex struggled with an under-performing engine all weekend, however after three hard fought heats, managed to scrape p.11 for the final. After a good start, he was 7th, but an accident on lap six meant he dropped down the field. He fought his way through the field to finish a respectable 8th.
